Are you planning to visit one of the most fun canyons in Jordan? It is definitely worth a visit. Let us tell you everything you need to know about the hike.

How to get to Wadi Mujib?

The easiest option is to rent a car or ask your accommodation near the Dead Sea for a transfer. It can cost anything between 30-50 JOD.

I would recommend you to stay for the night before in Mujib Chalets, so you only need to walk 5 minutes or drive 2 minutes to get to the visitor center.

Wadi Mujib hike

Let’s start at the beginning, don’t think about this as a typical hike. Although in the beginning, you will be walking in the canyon, a few minutes later you will definitely get wet. And later on, you will need to swim! Yes! You can consider this trip as a canyoning trip.

How long time does it take?

It takes about 2-3 hours to complete the Wadi Mujib hike.

Wadi Mujib entrance fee

The entrance fee to Wadi Mujib is 21 JOD for foreigners.

Is it only adults only?

Yes, children under the age of 18 cannot visit the trail. A couple of years ago there were some sad accidents, and they now strictly enforce the age limits.

Do you need a guide?

No, you do not need a guide for Wadi Mujib. At the toughest location of the trail, a guide or two will assist anyone in need.

If you need a transfer from Amman, you can talk with your accommodation for suggesting a reputable driver, or book a tranfer online.

What to wear to Wadi Mujib?

Life vest

The compulsory equipment is the life vests. They are in quite a bad condition, so definitely check, if you can zip and tie it, I had to go back and change mine.

Dry bag

Do you really want to bring something with you? You can bring your own dry bag or rent one for thefty 10 JOD. As I forgot to buy beforehand a phone cover, I used two zip lock bags to put my phone in.

Shoes

How about shoes? You can rent for 5 JOD water shoes but be prepared that they may run out of smaller sizes, and then you either wait for a long time or go on in your own shoes.

Water shoes are probably one of the best choices, especially if they have a good grip and are not only meant for swimming.

Can I wear hiking sandals? Absolutely! I did the hike in my decathlon sandals (open in front) and it was perfect. It didn’t get heavy and dried quickly after the hike.

Can I wear sports shoes? Yes, most people wore their sneakers or running shoes. Just make sure their sole has some grip ( you will need to step on wet stones), and be prepared that they will be wet.

Other clothes

Let’s talk about clothes. Dress as lightly as possible. I was wearing running pants (3/4th length), but I saw women in very short shorts too. It is fine to wear them. Choose something that dries quickly and doesn’t soak up too much water. As you will have your life west on, you can wear a running top or quickly drying t-shirt (I chose the last option).

I saw a man who was asked to wear pants and not to go in swimwear, so that’s something to keep in mind.

Changing room and toilets

There are changing rooms and toilets at the visitor center. You can also leave your car key where you pay for your tour.

Wadi Mujib Canyon

Let’s get back to nature. First, after the visitor center, you will descend some metal stairs to the Wadi. You start walking on. First, you can avoid water if you want to, but later on, it will be inevitable to get wet while you pass through the Wadi Mujib gorge.

How hard is the Wadi Mujib Siq trail?

It is medium hard according to my own judgment. You need a bit of coordination, and you should not be afraid of water. In the harder parts, you will find ropes that help you go against the current or climb the rocks.

There are two harder parts on the trail, but there are guides there who will assist you if you need any help at those locations.

At the end of the trail, you will reach a magnificent waterfall.

On the way back, you go on the same route.

Important to note, the Al Mujib trail is closed in winter (from November) as there can be too much water.

Wadi Mujib Ibex trail

It is a Wadi Mujib dry trail. So if you don’t want to get wet or you visit the area in wintertime, this is an alternative trail for you. The trek goes above the canyon with awesome Dead Sea views. It takes about 3 hours.

They will guide you at the visitor center where the trailhead is. For most hikes, there is a group minimum (and maximum too), so the prices may depend on that if you need a guide for your group.
